ACLU of Washington Comment on Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Decision to Maintain Current Eligibility Rules for School Sports

Published: April 08, 2025

SEATTLE – After a legal review by the Washington state Attorney General’s office, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has decided not to change its policies regarding transgender student participation in scholastic sports. The state attorney general’s office raised concerns that two amendments, circulated in fall of 2024, proposed changes in policy that would potentially violate federal and state civil rights laws.

ACLU-WA Legal Director La Rond Baker had this reaction:

"The WIAA made the correct decision to affirm state anti-discrimination laws and its policy that ensures transgender athletes continue participating in sports that match their gender identity and expression, and we urge the WIAA to stand by that decision. Attempts to restrict transgender girls from participating in sports conflict with the law and our core values as a state that prohibits discrimination. These efforts violate student privacy and only exacerbate anxiety for a group of students who already face alarming rates of discrimination. Schools should be inclusive environments and state leaders should act to keep them that way.”
