In 2023, the Legislature stopped the practice of automatically punishing people twice because of their involvement as children in the juvenile justice system. By not applying this legislation retroactively, the Legislature unfairly left up to 856 currently incarcerated people behind – serving a sentence length they might not receive under the updated guidelines used today.
Send a message now: House Representatives must promote fairness in sentencing by making the 2023 policy change retroactive. Tell them vote yes so HB 1274 can move to the Senate.
As a matter of fairness, sentencing reform that leads with equity and racial justice is needed now.
